The first manifesto of the 2011 Scottish Parliament Election…

On Tuesday 2nd February, ‘Scotland’s Sporting Chance: A manifesto for sport in Scotland’ was launched by former Scotland rugby international Scott Hastings.  The purpose of this manifesto is to raise awareness of the challenges facing Scottish sport from grassroots to elite performance. I recently joined Morhamburn from the Scottish Sports Association and was one of the group who presented to an MSP from each party in Holyrood gave me an enormous sense of pride and achievement having been fortunate enough to play a role in the development of this document.

Present at the launch on behalf of their parties were Michael Matheson (SNP), Ross Finnie (Lib Dem), Frank McAveety (Lab) and Liz Smith (Con) as well as numerous media representatives. The response of those in attendance was largely positive. Each MSP stated that the manifesto put forward good ideas for the improvement of Scottish sport, they agreed that sport should play a more prominent role than it currently does in school and in the wider community and all said they would look to include as much as possible in their own manifesto.  Those involved in sport policy have heard a lot of promises in the past so will hope that, this time, their patience is rewarded. What the manifesto has done for Scottish sport is to implant in MSP minds the benefits that sport can have on individuals and the wider community and ensure that they take this forward into their own manifestos.

‘Scotland’s Sporting Chance’ has been a long time coming and was influenced by many and I feel privileged to have had an input into. It should be celebrated that Scottish sport is speaking with one voice on behalf of the near one million who participate in sport in Scotland.
